I was a good student, though not the top of my class by any means. My real passion in school was not math, or science, or sports. It was foreign languages - particularly French. When I was in school, there was nothing more that I wanted than to be surrounded in nothing but the French language. I met some native speakers online with whom I would Skype often. I would watch French and Québec TV online, and once I had my license, I would even drive many miles just to have coffee with some French speakers in the state. I broke out of the textbooks and went above and beyond the classroom. I would watch all my favorite movies twice - once in English, and then again in French, trying to pick up all the translation equivalents that I could. I would talk to my friends in school in French - as much as they would put up with me (granted not very much. just for the mediocre amount of practice it would give me. And to some extent, it worked. Even then, many people mistook my pronunciation for being native (or at least, a child of native speakers. I scored advanced or near-native on any aptitude test you could give me. At some point during all of this, I decided that my future was not to live in France, but Québec. Québec was close-by, and offered me a whole new country, full of people who were extremely devoted to the French language. And since it's part of Canada, home will not be too far away, and the culture won't be that, that different. Soon, I began my four-year journey at McGill University, an English-language university in Québec's metropolis, Montréal. Bienvenue à Montréal I had prepared myself before I had arrived, and had learned a ton about Québec, its people, its history and especially its unique French-only linguistic policy. People even said that my accent in French sounded far more French-Canadian than French when I arrived. The day I set foot on Canadian soil, study permit in hand, I resolved that I would do everything outside of University life in French. I would meet friends who spoke French. I would integrate. Years of practice talking to far-away voices in French late at night over Skype could not have possibly prepared me for the overwhelmingly intense, soul-crushing and humiliating social pressure of trying to use your second language, for the first time, in day-to-day life. Even such a menial and insignificant task such as ordering cold cuts from the deli or ordering a slice of pizza became a whole episode of awkward penguin. What if they ask me something and I don't understand a word? Do I say "une pointe de pizza" like it says on the menu, or do I say "une part" like I was taught? Or do you say "une tranche" I just heard the guy before me order, and I didn't make out a single word he said. Do I say "s'il te plaît" or "s'il vous plaît. Do I say "Bonjour" or "Salut. There's a lot of people here, I don't want to hold up the line… Ok, ok. I'll go up to him, and I'll say "je prends une pointe de pizza, s'il te plaît. Does that sound stupid? Do I even know how to pronounce that correctly? What is pepperoni in French, just "pepperoni" Do they pronounce in English-style or French-style? Bonjour, hi! Uh hi, can I have a slice of cheese? Sure, no problem. And the pressure that has built up over me melts. They speak English. No more pressure about saying the right thing this time. No more pressure about not being able to understand him. I don't have to worry whether or not to say tu, vous, une pointe, or anything else. It all melts away, except for the pang of guilt that I feel. I am not the immigrant who integrated into society. Who doesn't respect the people by using their language. Everything was like this. If we didn't start in English, people would switch to English when, after a few back and forths, it became clear that I was not native in French - often met with a humiliating grin of some kind of smugness that I can't relate to, as if my desperate attempts to learn their language was seen as a cute little pathetic attempt at respect toward them, and nothing else. As soon as I saw this grin, it was too late - I knew we would never speak French again. Over the next few years, I tried my best to use French, but overall it has almost been to even a lesser extent than when I was in High School. I watched the news, I even went to a few meet-up groups, but found that they were mostly basic or intermediate level immigrants, and I didn't even get to speak much of the time. Using French in real-life was basically nonexistent. Life in Québec, after studies I recently graduated, got a good job at a very respectable global company with offices in Québec. For the most part, the staff is bilingual. Over time, I have almost resigned to the fact that I will never speak French, and to be honest, I feel incredibly confused, distressed and ashamed over all of it. When I go home, I read the news in French and often even try and go over future conversations I might have at work with my boss or colleagues in French. But inevitably I know that in practice, people will speak English to me, because their English will always be far superior than my French will ever be. Today, I am essentially resigned to the fact that I will never be one of them - I will never be able to flip between languages with such ease and elegance as them. Even my girlfriend, who is perfectly bilingual and speaks to her friends in French all the time, even she never addresses me back in French when I say something to her in French. Even though I expected that Québec would be a great place to fulfill my foreign language dream, it has been exactly the opposite in reality. Conclusion I'm not asking any questions, or blaming anyone (especially not Québec or its people, or even myself. I just wanted to share my story, because I hope it relates to some of you folks who have had similar experiences or other abroad. If you have, please share. Réalisé avec un dynamisme contagieux par Louise Archambault, écrit avec une verve savoureuse par Isabelle Langlois et porté par des Julie Perreault et Magalie Lépine-Blondeau très complices, ce road movie comique offre des rires à profusion tout en ménageant de jolis moments démotion. Amine 31❤. Ça fait un moment que ça me traîne en tête mais alors il faut que ça sorte: Je suis fatigué des infos actuelles. Oui le monde va mal et avec à notre connexion constante, tout concourt à nous le rappeler constamment. Et quand on en parle sur les réseaux sociaux, c'est pour se mettre sur la gueule. Sortir de la négativité et essayer de faire des propositions concrète à notre échelle est ignoré dans le meilleur des cas, ridiculisé par une armée d'opposants dans le pire. D'un autre coté, il existe des médias qui mettent en avant des informations positives, mais je me rends bien compte que s'enfermer là dedans c'est se voiler la face et se déconnecter des réalités. Sans compter que la plupart du temps ces médias sont constitués à 99% de news anecdotiques du genre "un SDF a sauvé des bébés chats. Tout ceci fait que je me sens un peu perdu aujourd'hui. Je rêve d'un espace bienveillant et constructif, sans être aveugle sur les difficultés d'aujourd'hui. Il me semble avoir entendu que certains réseaux sociaux s'étaient lancés sur le créneau, est-ce que quelqu'un en aurait déjà testé? Pour finir, je pensais à une comparaison avec la youtubosphère ciné (US. Certains font leur beurre sur des critiques négatives et du pinaillages (et ça marche) mais mes chaînes préférées sont celles qui sont capables d'analyser en profondeur les défauts et qualités d'un film, mais vont principalement communiquer leur enthousiasme sans cynisme et mettre en valeur la qualité d'un travail à coté duquel on aurait pu passer. Je pense notamment à Movies with Mikey, CineFix ou encore Patrick H Willems. Je me demande s'il est possible d'imaginer un équivalent coté actualité. Et je ne parle pas de titres du genre "un potentiel remède contre le cancer pour dans 10 ans" du fin fond d'une rubrique science, mais plutôt être capable de dire par exemple les signes d'espoir qu'apportent les gilets jaunes, ou même d'être capable de peser le pour et le contre d'une réforme économique (sans être 100% pour ou contre en fonction du bord politique dont vient la proposition. Je me rends bien compte du risque d'enfermement dans une bulle bisounours. Mais 1) ce média ne serait pas destiné à être la seule source d'information de ses participants, et 2) plus le temps passe, et plus son existence me semble une question de survie. Qu'en pensez-vous?
